I believe that we all have been cheated as designers/advertisers. Why you ask? Did anyone see Superbowl XLI? Well...sorry let me apologize. The game...whoa! AMAZING! Where we all got cheated was with the lame, lackluster, boring commercials. I'm sorry if you're a K-Fed fan but I think that his 12 minutes of fame might actually reach 15. Sad to believe but true.
How can we as designers be satisfied with these commercials? I know that there are other sources of influence besides television commercials but this is the Superbowl. This is our biggest day of the year to showcase what we've got. The world is watching. We are watching, waiting to be inspired. I was waiting to see the next Budweiser lizard commercial, not literally. Those lizards were so creative and inspiring. Here three dumb looking frogs "ribbiting" a brand name. Interesting. This is what I need. Sorry Sheryl Crow, I don't need or care to know about your fake colored hair. What...don't remember that commercial. My point exactly.
I can't say that all the commercials were bad but definitely just not what I am used to. Hopefully as all of us enter the design world we will remember these Superbowl commercials as a whole and vow to do better. The commercials will fade like those mud spots on that wannabe dalmatian...phony. I guess sometimes we need inspiration on not what to do so in those regards...Thanks.
