I would like to think that most companies that donate to charities are doing it for the right reason and not to make more money for themselves. I realize though, in this day and age many companies are greedy and use charity work as a tool to better increase their own profits. On one hand I'm not against the "win-win" scenario. It is true that if a company is donating money to a good cause or charity and they profit somewhat from this transaction, both sides win. On the other hand, I don't think that it is necessary to promote and advertise these donations with the sole purpose of getting press and making more money because of it. If a large company brings in a butt-load of money each year, they should donate to charities. If your making multi-millions each year whats a few million for a charity going to hurt. This should be a ethical decision that makes the company feel like they are really making a change, not building their image.
Large companies should be more modest about their donations; people would respect a company more to somehow find out later that they have been involved with charities, rather than having that fact shoved down their throat. I'm not saying that letting the public know of a companies charitable actions is always wrong, It depends how and why they are doing it. One major factor is that hopefully these companies are being honest about what percent ect. they are actually donating and not exaggerating or capping off the amount. It is also key that these companies stand behind what they support. For example, a company such as Reebok should not support world wide human rights if they are paying Indonesian workers twenty-five cents an hour to make their shoes.
One thing that does bother me is the fact that people search to find flaws in companies that are sincerely trying to do good. It seems to me that it's probably fairly hard to have every single corporate decision or aspect be 100 percent morally correct. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but come on lets be realistic. I just feel that if a company is really trying to do the right thing and help a worthy cause or donate their money to one, they should not get bad press for a minor screw-up. There are probably thousands of greedy companies that make a ton of money and don't donate a dime to anything. People should be proud of companies that donate to charities, and if these companies generate more profits because of it, good for them, they should then donate more next year.
