Putting off...in all aspects, never good

I was having trouble getting my blog account to work at the start of the semester, but I just kept saying 'I'll take care of it later'. And then later turned into later, and so on....But since the purpose of blogging this semester is to discuss issues in design, putting things off raises a good point. If designers keep putting off the fact that design needs to be more ethical, and 'leaving it up to the next guy', then are we ever going to progress? Focus needs to be put on more environmently car parts, instead of how many dvd players and chrome exhaust systems we can cram into the next monsterous sized suv. More emphasis needs to be put into showing people how smoking is bad, and not putting a new friendly, well illustrated camel into every magazine. But without someone saying 'we need to change this', nothing will change. Especially when a company shoves big dollar signs in designers faces. I pose the question, will money always cause designer tunnel vision, or will someone be 'the next guy'.

Dude, nice.

I've been questioning the same ideas myself, wondering if the requirements of society (paying taxes, earning wages, contributing in some way or another to the social order) will end up becoming more important to me than truthful creative expression or design. It seems like the "beef" in the real world doesn't ever reallly mesh with what our morals inspire us towards. The sad truth is that I am probably going to whatever I have to to pay for the things in my life like rent, cars, girlfriends, self-promotion, and so on. I have accepted the fact that if I want to work for a design firm, I might have to work another job on the sides, so I can afford to live the way I want and to create the way I want.

I'm afraid that I won't have the opportunity to be "the next guy" until much later, maybe the long side of 10 years, minimum. Not a happy thought, and to quote 2Pac: "Hey, I gotta get paid. Well that's the way it is."
