Cravings.

Ran across this quote. What do you guys think?

“What students have in mind when they (inevitably) describe themselves as ‘creative’ is someone who challenges the status quo…To set out to design ‘change’ is also to crave attention. The concerns that initially lead many students to design–humane, political, social, and practical–are, too often, later replaced by design at its most intrusive, short-lived, and disposable form. The very idea of design being a public service could not be further from most students’ minds. The celebrity status that too many consider a representation of success does not easily equate with the concept of service.” (David Jury)

That hurts my feelings.
But I understand why he says that. It seems that in the educational realm of design, we can express our opinions of social, humane, political, or practical design application with support and praise from our proffessors and advisors. I'm not sure that the envronment out of school will treat our personal ethics and goals with the same respect or value, in fact, I have good sources which say that the opposite is true.

Are we really becoming design celebrities by choice? or is it a matter of survival? Or, does Jury forget that it is easy to talk the talk than walk the walk? We talk the talk for hours on end every week, but are we applying it? NO. I'm not sure we will either, being enrty-level soon, and trying to pay bills.

Its a fact of life that only the truly magnificent reach any honorable accomplishments without being in the industry/workforce/design community for a significant amount of time.

So, if Jury thinks we are selling out, maybe he's right. I prefer (optimistically) that we are waiting until we have some pull in our community before trying to implement change or radical ideas.

That's what I'm going for, at least.
