Pro3: Gun Bill
The article that I am chosing to cover is about a gun bill that is in front of Congress. The article is about Mayor Michael Bloomberg's, of New York City, fight against the bill. The bill in question would prohibit the release of the records from the the national gun-trace database. The records could only be used in a "bona fide criminal investigation or prosecution" and not in civil suites. Bloomberg is looking to use the trace records to weed out the irresponsible gun dealers who do not follow the A.T.F.'s guidlines on the selling of firearms. According to Bloomberg 300 of the 540 homicides in NYC occured with illegal firearms. This bill would make it harder for civil lawsuites to be brought against "rogue" dealers and therefore even more difficult to hold them accountable for their carelessness. This is a rising concern, as more and more people are dying. It is still far to easy for criminals to find a gun even if they go through a dealer or a pawn shop where the owners are just seeing the money in their pockets and not the blood on the streets. It is not really much different from the tobacco industry now being somewhat held accountable for their actions as firearms ultimately put more peoples lives into danger.
