Crossing

So came across and found it to be pretty interesting. After watching the clip i wonder how many pedestrians got hit because they were distracted. (sorry that might be in bad taste)

Yeah. totally and completely cool.

However, you make a good point. the wondering of how many people have gotten hit due to the fact that they were paying attention to the names painted on the street and not the cars quickly approaching.

this really gives way to the idea of practicality or --- considering the result of the design experience. i wonder if the creators of this thought this through to the end-- the implications of people walking a bit more slowly to read the names rather than walking quickly to avoid the traffic.

-- i think this makes a good point. that decisions must be thought all the way through - especially in this type of design.

i wonder in what other ways this idea could be executed to produce the same information, but maybe increasing awareness of pedestrian surroundings.

the problem is that a balance needs to be found. obviously, other forms of displaying this information may not have the same impact as the zebra stripes, but perhaps it could bring about a better solution. maybe not just the names would be the star of the show.

>>> what if the zebra stripes were just a series of several large words that led to a list of names on the other side?

-- you know, something like " MAKE SURE TO WALK QUICKLY " . . . . and then on the other side a graphic on the SIDEWALK that held all of the victims.

hrm. i don't know. i still think this is a pretty cool idea, but perhaps refinements need be made.

Agree with you angie. There does need to be this balance. What I was really intrigued with this clip was this is a memorial. I thought this was a very interesting and different way to display a memorial. Very different than most but Yes they do need to find some way that this stands out to the public but also doesn't drive so much attention that the public may get distracted on where they are walking.

I think it is an interesting idea to promote awareness but yeah to some extent I feel that it could have been present in a more appropriate manner. As yeah probably not the safest due to the fact that not everyone stops at cross walks - I being one of them...and maybe this may contribute to more accidents. I wonder if there is a way to point out to the drivers this idea.

I think its beautiful in its simplicity of transforming an everyday occurence into a memorial. However, if you think about how many people may just completely ignore the severity of the matter, and also how many probably walked over it not even noticing it. I think that with a little more consideration someone could have made this have a far larger impact.
