A few years ago the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil banned all forms of outdoor advertising with the intent of cleaning up the "visual pollution" of the city. Because of the law, billboards were covered, signs were painted over and posters were taken down. The idea of a city devoid of advertising is quite fascinating to me because it is such an important part of visual communication and visual persuasion. Without it, I wonder if we'll see new and innovative forms of advertisements from the city of Sao Paulo.
What do you all think? What if it's not just Sao Paulo, Brazil that bans all forms of outdoor advertising, but the whole world? Is outdoor advertising necessary?

to be honest i greatly appreciate this project. especially as someone wanting to take the career route of environmental designer. a world without ads is a cleaner, less obtrusive world... thanks for the post.
