bill evans on establishing expectations of oneself

the universal mind of bill evans presented itself to me today and affirmed that the internet, when used responsibly, can really produce valuable opportunities for edifying discoveries.

throughout the series, mr. evans frequently refers to building upon a stable reference -- to allow complexity to evolve organically from what is "simple and honest." he reminds us that principles hold primacy over style.

in video 4/5, (5:00 in for the impatient) mr. evans reveals his own simple and honest principle -- to "take care of the music." mr. evans concluded that the most important thing he could do was to establish a reasonable expectation of himself, a declaration of his devotion to music. a personal manifesto, if you will.

the result? authentic and inimitable expressions -- precision and mastery of craft so profound that it feels more like virtue than talent. mr. evans teaches us that genius requires a sincere ethic at its core. anything else is a disingenuous approximation.
