visual advocacy: January 2006
To sell out is to put aside one’s personal beliefs in exchange for some sort of reward such as prestige or the all mighty dollar. It is unfortunately easy to do in this society of wanting, and often the only consequence is the individual’s conscience and self worth. The betrayal of his principals may make his reward bittersweet.

I don't necessarily think of selling out as something that we as graphic designers do, but more of a pleasing of the client. Many other art forms such as painting for example, do more of the art for themselves and not as much for the client. The client goes for the finished product in that field more as where graphic designers are seeked out and then the work is created. I also found it interesting in Kathy McCoy's article when she discussed about students of different majors at Cranbrook attented graphic design critques. I can see where this could be a good practice, as it would help to see how different mind sets go about seeing things. It would be similar to when we have guest critics as they haven't seen the whole project process and just the finished product. Their views always seem to not have much relivance, but i feel as though they do, because the end product is how a majority of people are going to view the work.
