no convictions

wow.

it was pretty amazing to sit in class on monday and hear just how few convictions we have. i wonder if we are just a particularly apathetic group of people, or if we are a particularly apathetic generation. have we been taught to keep quiet because of the political-correctness campaign that has been thrown at us since a young age, or is it a response to the "tolerant" postmodern culture we are living in. it seems like everywhere we turn, we are told that tolerance is the most important quality - that no matter what our personal convictions are regarding a particularly controversial subject, we cannot voice our opinion for fear of being labeled “intolerant”. i hope my generation will be able to stand up one day and express our true convictions without fear of being labeled politically incorrect. my grandmother always said “the chicken that sticks its neck out gets served for dinner. i think it was in an attempt to quell my strong chutzpah – obviously it was a failure…

let’s think deeply about who we are, what we stand for, and what we can do with the power we have been given.

stef,
i think i messed up by making the issue so charged and political in class. perhaps i shouldn't have posed *both* of lasn's questions, but maybe just one: what do you feel strongly about?

our answers as individuals need not be along political lines or agendas, could only relate to our convictions which would also relate to our experiences.

so please, identify the things that you are committed to when they pop up. write then down and practice sharing them with others.

I came away from class on Monday thinking to myself, oh my god...do i not feel strongly against anything?? do i need to wake up and smell the roses or just keep on keepin on? but then the more i got to thinking about it (and as the day went on, i mean come on, it was a manic monday...we all know how they are!) I do have things that i feel very strongly about, but are things that i my head seem important, but then when i think about vocally annoucing them, they seem less important and noteworthy. I think that this is mainly because it seems that the topic that most people are so strongly addiment about is politics and i have no interest in that, which is good and bad on my part. Are we so afraid of what others would think that we keep things that really are convictions inside? So i think deep down inside that my strongest conviction would be just that, that we should let people not feel burdened with their views and be able to share them without wondering what people will think. Yikes, personally sounds hard, but something to strive for. Oh yes...Shef (HAHA) what is chutzpah?

landon... chutzpah is a yiddish word for boldness/brazenness. it describes a type of behavior that is typically thought to be outspoken and a little controversial.
