Target: Design for All

Target: Design for All?

this article brings up a couple interesting points...

first of all, i question their labeling Target as a"designer" department store. actually I am unsure what defines something as a "designer" product. is it something that is designed by a designer? and isn't everything technically designed by someone? i think that Target is just really good at marketing products that are trendy for younger generations and that sets them apart from other places like walmart or kmart.

"Is Target only committed to profitable design ventures?"
Yes, as they should be. If something isn't profitable, customers aren't buying it, and if customers aren't buying it, it's probably because they don't like it, don't want it, or don't need it. But I would probably enjoy some of the more "edgy" products as opposed to the more generic ones.

designer is like a name, it puts on a face, a facade that lets you know it's their style, their passion, and their cut. i think the world is overcome by designer this, collection that, but with target, its more obtainable, but also less about the name, when you hear someone has a nice dress, you ask where they got it, it isn't right away, isaac mizrahi, it's Target. and the way they link themselves to those brands is why target has become the democratic design store. designer is just another word for brand.

Rhianna i agree with you about Target being successful at reaching out to the younger generations in order to sell more products. each company has their own way of reaching out to their audience. wal-mart is all about things being as cheap as possible with out the luxuries of overly designed products. I think of Target as being a higher class department store therefore it is completely legitimate for them to carry products that have more of a designer quality. It also seems like society is becoming more and more materialistic, Target is obviously picking up on this with marketing the more trendy things. People gravitate to pretty things, and target is cashing in.
