Society for Responsible Design

The Society for Responsible Design, Inc was founded in 1989 by designers who wanted to be part of the solution -- not the problem. The aim of the SRD is to work towards a sustainable future through environmentally and socially responsible design practices. Objectives include the promotion and dissemination of information on responsible design among Australian designers, manufacturers and end-users. Fostering a market for environmentally responsible products and services is also a high priority.

A non-profit volunteer-based organisation, membership to the SRD is open to all persons and businesses with an interest in sustainable design. The SRD embraces all streams of design from architecture, interiors, furniture, industrial, apparel, textile, landscape, exhibition, graphic, packaging and more. An annual series of public SRD Talks brings together presenters from all these professions. A quarterly newsletter, Loose Leaves, keeps members informed on current issues and often includes transcripts of the SRD Talks.

Having collected 'green' design information for the past 10 years the SRD has a wealth of data that is being transferred to the digital form of the EcoInfoBank. A computer register of SRD members provides the SkillsBank referral service. The SRD has organised various exhibitions to further promote materials, products and services with an environmental or social benefit.
